Description

Casa Birdie is a private oasis for any bird lover! Sleeping up to eleven with lots of room to entertain both indoors and out, this villa is great for larger parties looking to take advantage of one of the island’s best beaches in privacy. Just two minutes away, San Francisco beach welcomes the Caribbean Sea in style. One TripAdvisor rating boasted, “Beautiful beach. Nice bar area and gorgeous swimming pool (very clean). The staff were very friendly. Food and beverages were cheap and good. Excellent frozen margaritas and authentic chips/salsa.” All of this and the world’s best snorkeling, scuba diving, and deep-sea fishing is steps from Casa Birdie!

Casa Birdie is located south of downtown San Miguel, about a ten minute car ride from the main square or fifteen minutes south from Cozumel’s International Airport. You’ll be close to all of the island’s shopping, restaurants, nightlife, including Cozumel’s only Jack Nicklaus designed golf course and multi-theater movie complex.

The private driveway leading to Casa Birdie is tree lined and lush with tropical foliage. The house is stunning with columns, large windows, and terraces. There is even a third-floor outdoor patio including a palapa, Spanish for natural, thatched umbrella, for shade, a hammock, and many lounge chairs to soak in the Caribbean sun overlooking the tropical jungle and turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Inside, Casa Birdie lives up to its namesake, whimsically decorated with many tropical birds! The home is styled in traditional Mexican elegance, with heavy wood furniture and clean, cool tiled floors. The kitchen is large with a breakfast bar to enjoy meals or you can opt to dine at the large dining table buttressed by beautiful windows. Enjoy the calming island breezes while drifting to sleep as each bedroom has access to the second-floor balcony. One bedroom has a trundle-day bed that rolls out to comfortably sleep two adults on twin-sized mattresses. A full-sized airbed and an extra mattress are also provided for any overflow guests who decide to spend the night! Upstairs, the two mini-suites consist of large bedrooms with private baths and private balconies. Downstairs, the bedroom also has a private bath.

Casa Birdie is great option if you’re looking for a private villa with lots of space just steps from the beach!

Unique Home-unfortunately not for me (A TripAdvisor Member)
Casa Birdie truly lives up to its name! The decor is all birds, all kinds of birds, parrots, roosters, flamingos, rubber ducks-even a very interesting picture depicting cock fights. It is clear that the owner, Gail and her family love and used this house well. There were two in my party so we certainly did not use the entire home. We used the first floor bedroom which has a very large room and adjoining bathroom. The living room is large, the furnishings are not comfortable for sitting and viewing the TV (with satellite programming, including HBO). The couches seem to be geared more for sleeping, as they pull out like a trundle. The main selling point for us to book the property was the pool and proximity to beach and we love the south end of Cozumel. The pool is great, there is an outside thatched cabana with hammock and lounge chairs. I had to make a complaint to the owner about the cleanliness of the pool area- she had it taken care of and was nice about it. I almost was not going to say anything about this. I am mentioning it because I want my fellow TA Reviewers not to leave anything out of a review. So I will say I was disappointed my first impression of in my opinion the best thing about the rental- was ruined by iguana poop. Someone cleans the pool three times a week and iguanas are wild so, stuff happens. We enjoyed the pool everyday and at night after our beach and snorkeling excursions. The roof patio is nice, it provides a very small sliver of a view of the ocean. On the way up to the roof, watch out for cactus and trees that have become overgrown -pushing through the railings, it will hurt. There are no lights. So do have a flashlight. All the doors and windows have iron bars and they are all locked with padlocks- that is a real pain to open and close each time. The other review and the owners ad says that Casa Birdie was made with your comfort in mind. I have no doubt this was true 20 or more years ago. Everything is old and dated, sheets, towels, furniture, dishes are plastic bird plates, pots have handles falling off, ceiling fans rusty and laden with dust, air vents and air conditioner units caked with dirty dust. In the bedroom and kitchen the paint and plaster is coming off the lower walls. There are feather masks nailed to the wall that have seen better days and should be removed if even to dust them properly. The curtains do not fit the windows, they are barely hanging on to broken hooks in several spots. Lots of ants in the house, esp by water sources and when food comes out the ants are ready for dinner. As I said before Casa Birdie well used and obviously loved , this is not the property for someone like me who feels more comfortable in a cleaner, updated location, that pays attention to details. The price was great at $189 a night. If you rent this property get a car or jeep, it's pretty necessary and makes things much easier. The phone barely works- but the wifi was great. Regarding the beaches: Casa Birdie is unique, large and in a great location, a path takes you to , The Ocean Club . Charly owner is a good guy and has snorkel excursions very reasonably priced. San Francisco beach is crowded with three rows of beach chairs, you can use the beach for free but you can't sit down since the entire area is covered with chairs, that you have to rent, busy men hawk you for drinks and the ocean view is crowded with large inflatable climbing toys. The beach is like this for a ways but you can walk on down past this stuff and find a quiet open area. Again, a quiet open beach is more to my liking. Others obviously enjoy this beach scene. There were no instructions on how to use things at the house. We could not figure out a few things and had to call local manager on broken phone. No answering machine for messages. Gail was nice and easy to work with, not the same for local property manager. You have to pick up the keys at his restaurant , which is in town and closed no air conditioning and uncomfortable. Gail said Tony will help you with anything you need before you get here. Beside having a jeep rental he was not helpful to me. If you do not mind feeling like you are going to a family or friends beach home, then this is the rental for you. This is not a negative recommendation for Casa Birdie simply my opinion that it is a location that could use more attentive on site property management, that will make the home ready for guest arrival by paying action to details.

Casa Birdie was Fabulous! (Steve H)
We stayed at Casa Birdie for 15 days in June and it was great! The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we could have needed, plenty of bottled water. The pool area was perfect for gathering. The rooftop patio/palapa was huge and had great views, perfect for yoga! The bedrooms were quite large and the bathrooms we very nice. There was easy walking access to several beach clubs. It is a beautiful vacation home, stocked with movies and books. Having the washer and dryer was very handy! There is a lot of outside lounging space, plenty of room for a large group like we had. I would stay here again for sure if I had more than 4 people! The booking process was easy, and the property manager Tony Rome was very helpful!

Great vacation (Frank)
We had a fabulous stay at Casa Birdie. After a day of activities or at the beach it was nice to go back to a place that felt like home. We especially liked the pool area and the view from the rooftop terrace. Gail and Tony were very helpful with information on Cozumel. A bit far from the town center but if you want to avoid the cruise ship crowd this place is ideal, also in my opinion the nicest beaches are around here. We would definitely go back.

Everything We Wanted (Grady R.)
Being our fourth trip to Cozumel my wife and I knew a little bit about the island although a lot has changed in the last 25 years. For our most recent trip we were bringing our grown children and wanted to make sure we all had our own space. Casa Birdie was a great choice. With three bedrooms and three separate baths we all had the privacy we needed but still enjoyed relaxing together in the pool or watching the sunsets over the water from the rooftop terrace. The house had all the amenities we needed (towels, dishes, bottled water) and the air-conditioning worked fine although it took us awhile to learn how to adjust it. We had spent a lot of time in San Miguel on previous trips and decided we wanted to be closer to the beaches. Most of the rentals we looked at were too small or over-priced. Casa Birdie was in our budget and just a short walk away from Carlos & Charlie’s, San Francisco, and Paradise beaches which had plenty of activities for all including para-sailing, jet skis and kayaks. The beaches are free to swim but of course costs for food, drink, and activities can add up. Being outside of the town you’ll need to rent a car. There are several places in town to do that if you’re coming over by the ferry. On your way south you’ll want to stop at the Mega or Chedraui superstores to pick up groceries. Nearby attractions we visited included Punta Sur which is a 15 minute drive south and home to beautiful beaches, an ecological park, and two bars called Rastas and Bob Marley’s. To our disappointment we learned that the road to Punta Sur closes after dark so you’ll need to go during the day to swim, relax at the bars, and take in some great views. Once again we loved our visit to Cozumel and Casa Birdie work perfectly for this trip. We recommend the house for its great access to the beaches, lovely rooftop views and reasonable price. Thanks Gail

Best trip to Cozumel yet (Bill)
Our family has been to Cozumel several times over the last 15 years. We always stayed at hotels. Not any more. Not is it more economical, it is more flexible, larger accomodations and private. You need a car because you are about 10 minutes from San Miguel, the main village were all the restaurants and stores are located. We rented VW convertibles online from Less Pay for $33/day including gas and insurance. Now let me say this--- these cars are real junkers but we were more amused by their condition than upset about it. Very cheap but you can always rent from Hertz, Avis etc. for a better car.Our group was me(dad), my wife, two 20year old daughters and one of their girlfriends. I was just one of the girls all week and it was great. You can walk to the beach from the house. The pool at Birdie was nice and the rooftop palapa was my favorite. The house is exactly as pictured maybe nicer than the pics. The house is very clean and well equipted with every thing you need. Towels/linens, beach towels, bottled water, beach gear. internet connection, TV , local cell phone and a local property manager Tony Rome who can not do enough for you and is pretty much at your disposal for advice or any problems. Bathrooms (3) are tiled and beautiful. AC works great but you don't always need it as some days the breezes with the ceiling fans are all you need to be quite comfortable. Outdoors the various birds are plentiful and occaisionally you get an Iguana sighting.Day one we picked up our junk car and went to Mega the large supermarket in San Miguel to pick up breakfast foods, snacks, beer and drinks. Daily we either went to the uncrowed beaches on the east side of the island and had lunch at the Bob Marley Bar or Coconuts bar or had lunch in San Miguel.Driving around the island is a blast. Afternoons we spent at the pool or rooftop at the villa. Evenings we would take the short drive to San Miguel to have dinner. There are many restaurants in the village and on the square and most are good. Try Casa Dennis, Tony Romes (yes your caretaker). Do not be afraid to go away from the square and go to restaurants that are in several blocks into the neighborhoods (very safe). Definitely go to La Choza ,great authentic Mex/Yucatan plates. El Moro is terrific. Go to LosOtates for the best tacos, pozole and very cheap. Go to Sabores on 5th Ave for breakfast aaor lunch. A delightful family run restaurant in their home and rear outdoor courtyard.Casa Birdie is your best Choice!!

Casa Birdie Cozumel (John)
In Feb. 2011, our family spent a week at Casa Birdie on Cozumel. The property is approximately 12 km South of San Miguel, hence, is quiet and, though not on the water, is literally a 3 minute walk to lovely Playa San Francisco. The house itself is wonderful with 3 huge bedrooms(each with its own bathroom/shower/etc.), an open-style kitchen, living room and dining room(on the ground floor) and a palapa(with a great view) on the roof. If you are interested in snorkeling, there are several spots nearby(including Playa San Francisco) where fish are plentiful. A few kilometers north of Casa Birdie - just south of Chankanab - there are a number of stretches of beach where the snorkeling is fabulous. In the backyard of Casa Birdie is a lovely, private, pool with a patio, a covered palapa, and an outdoor shower. Though a vehicle was required, everyone in our group preferred being "in the country" rather than close to town. If groceries were needed, 2 superstores(Mega & Chedraui) - both on the south side of San Miguel - were only 10 minutes away and we wouldn't hesitate to head in to pick up fresh bolillos(buns) in the morning. The owners were most accommodating and the maps and information they sent prior to our visit were extremely helpful. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Casa Birdie to anyone.

Relaxing, peaceful place to be (Valerie)
I loved it, very relaxing, charming and comfortable. If you don't feel like moving, sit around the pool under the Palapa or on the roof-top patio. A short stroll takes you right on to San Francisco Beach. You do need a car, but this is far better than being in town, and once you have a vehicle you can head over to beaches on the other side of the island so easily, Casa Birdie is well looked after, cute clean, spacious and a great place to spend a vacation.

A Great Stay! (Brian & Karla)
We spent one week at Casa Birdie over the Christmas Holidays (December 2010) and had a wonderful time. The house was exactly as advertised - very clean and very well maintained. We couldn't have been more pleased with the layout - three suites worked perfectly for us, our two children (aged 3 and 5), and family that visited for a couple of days. From Casa Birdie it was a 2 minute walk to the beach and beach clubs/restaurants - which is where we spent most of our time. Our stay at Casa Birdie was fabulous - we spent a lot of time at the beach drinking margarita’s, making sand castles, and swimming in the ocean. It took a couple of days for our daughter (5yrs old) to get comfortable in the water, but once she did, we couldn’t get her out! We took many trips into town and had a fabulous New Year’s Eve dinner at Kinta’s. We rented a vehicle (which is a must do) and made our way around the island a couple of times – it was just a terrific location for us. Tony (the property manager) was very helpful, especially on our arrival, and ensured that everything went smoothly for us. And prior to heading down to Cozumel, the owners were super helpful and very easy to deal with - Gail answered all of our questions and had many great suggestions on what to see and do - which we really appreciated! We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay on the island - we would higly recommend Casa Birdie!

We loved Casa Birdie! (tpfleg)
We took three teenagers to Casa Birdie, and all of us loved it! It was so nice to have a home to go to after daily adventures. The home itself is cute, spacious, comfortable, and with all needed amenities. We especially loved the rooftop patio! It's a bit out of town, so a rental car is needed. Also, it's not terribly close to the beach, and we did have some trouble getting into some of the nearby beaches (they charge you to use their beaches). But, we would definitely stay there again, as it's a great home base! We had trouble with the refrigerator, but it was promptly fixed. We felt very well taken care of! Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!
