Here’s a quick translation of an article that first appeared in elfinanciero.com yesterday and subsequently in a bunch of different sources:
U.S. businessman Donald Trump has invested $65 million to build two hotels in Cozumel on the North side of the island.
This project is expected to start in 2012 and stretch over the next four years. His plan will add a thousand hotel rooms, a golf course and a marina in the first stage, as expressed by Aurelio Joaquin Gonzalez, Mayor of Cozumel.
These two new hotels will join the hotel Bahía Turquesa, in which Hilton will invest 5-million dollars to make available 200 more hotels rooms, also in the North part of the island.
Regarding the growth of the tourism industry specifically, Joaquín González said that in 2011 Cozumel will experience a growth of tourism from 3-million 600 thousand tourists to 4-million, largely as a result of the new Interjet flights linking Mexico City and Cozumel. Those are expected to start July 1, and there will be four flights weekly to start, and one flight daily during the winter / high season.
Joaquín also asserted that by 2012 Cozumel will reach 5-million visitors, as it continues to be the number one destination for cruise ship traffic in Mexico and the Caribbean.
The mayor also highlighted an investment of 30-million pesos for the construction of the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, a project that will provide more and better tourist facilities in Cozumel.
