Where To Stay is a series where we feature one of Cozumel’s many vacation rental options.
Residencias Reef is a well-reviewed and regarded condo development on the South side of Cozumel, approx. 20 min. driving distance from downtown. It’s large (stretching over 8 acres) and occupies 4 buildings which house a total of 76 condos. The best thing about Residencias Reef is that it’s located on beautiful San Francisco beach, so you won’t have to drive anywhere to visit the beach, snorkel, or even dive. The development is right next the Wyndham Resort & Spa, which allows Residencias Reef guests to use their wooden dock for easy dive boat pick-up (there is a $3usd per person fee for using the dock).
A few minutes walk down the beach, you’ll also find several beach clubs which are open until 5pm each day. They are a good place to take kids and/or have lunch.
Amenities
Residencias Reef has two large pools with outdoor showers and a great beach with palapas for shade and plenty of beach loungers. The pool closest to the ocean has a small kitchen, bathrooms and a communal reading library. There was a point in time when Residencias Reef guests were allowed to buy a day pass and use the facilities (gym, tennis courts, etc) in the neighboring Wyndham Resort & Spa, but since a change in ownership in March 2011, that is no longer the case.
Accommodations
There are studios, 1-bedrooms, 2-bedrooms, 3-bedrooms, and very large 4-bedroom penthouses to choose from. The buildings closest to the ocean are Buildings 1 & 4 and have the best ocean views. None of the buildings, however, are very far from the ocean. The farthest building from the beach, Building 3, is only approx. 250 ft. (100 meters) from the edge of the sand.
Prices
Because there are so many condos available, you’ll be able to find good deals, especially in the low-season. High-season tends to be busy in this popular development, so book early. Depending on time of year, studios and 1-bedrooms typically rent for $85-$170/night, 2-bedrooms for $125-$300/night, 3-bedrooms for $250-$400/night, and 4-bedroom penthouses for $285-$650/night. In the larger condos, there are also discounts available for groups that have less than the maximum number of allowed guests.
Pros

- Private and uncrowded atmosphere.
Cons
- Located 20 min. outside of town, so you will need a rental car. Taxis to/from Residencias Reef are approx. $12usd one way.
- No restaurants nearby. The beach clubs where you can have lunch close at 5pm.
