Description
Residencias Reef (or sometimes known as the Reef Condos) is an oceanfront development of one to four bedroom rental condos located about 10 miles (20 minutes) south of downtown Cozumel, Mexico (also known as San Miguel de Cozumel). It's right on San Francisco beach (a long, sandy beach) and sandwiched between the Wyndham and Aura hotels on one side and a stretch of private villas on the other.
In our opinion, it's the nicest condo development on the south side of the island. It's well-managed, the condos are spacious (all include linens and most include beach towels, DVD players, coffee machines, and washing machines and dryers), the grounds are really nicely-kept, and it's gated with 24/7 roving security.
Check-in to most condos is around 3pm and check-out is around 10am. If you arrive earlier, you can usually leave your luggage with your property manager or with security at the front of the development.
Residencias Reef has four main buildings (Buildings 1, 2, 3 and 4). The numbers of the condos in Building 1 start with 5000, Building 2 starts with 6000, Building 3 with 7000, and Building 4 with 8000. Buildings 1 and 4 are the closest to the beach. And in fact Building 1 is directly on the beach.
Buildings 1 and 2 were the first to be built and contain the smallest number of condos - 13 in Building 1 and 12 in Building 2. Buildings 3 and 4 came last and have more condos - 24 in Building 3 and 27 in Building 4.
Don't let those numbers fool you though. The development does not at all feel crowded. Many of the condos are either yet to be sold (especially those in Buildings 2 and 3) or their owners don't make them available for rent. So even in the High Season (Nov-Apr), the entire place feels private and open.
Residencias Reef has two heated swimming pools. The main swimming pool, an infinity pool with both shallow and deep areas, is between Buildings 1 and 4, right next to the beach. The other pool is in front of Building 3. It's setback about 200 yards from the beach. You'll often find that this back pool is completely empty. It's a good place for kids to hang out because they can play and be loud without disturbing other guests.
On the beach, you'll find five large shaded "palapas" or palm umbrellas, each with a set of beach loungers. These umbrellas and loungers are for the exclusive use by Residencias Reef guests. There are also a couple hammocks strung among the trees, where you can lounge with a good book or take a well-deserved siesta.
When you're ready for some more action, you can walk 10 minutes south on the beach to the Carlos n' Charlie's, San Francisco, and Paradise beach clubs. These places are open until around 5pm each day, so they're a good place to grab a late breakfast, lunch, or early dinner.
